Ice bergs can melt when they reach slightly warmer waters and warm air can melt the iceberg on the surface. This creates what are called ‘melt ponds’ which trickle down the iceberg, creating cracks. The warmer water also works on the bottom of the iceberg, breaking it up little by little.
