Good question! Linguistics is the scientific study of languages. Linguists are scientists who try to find out how different languages work, how our brain and our body produce and understand them, why there are so many different languages in the world and how they may be related to each other, what the psychological and social aspects of languages are, how we learn (and forget) languages, and so on 🙂 These are all scientific approaches, that’s why linguistics is often called a ‘social science’ or it is classified as part of the ‘humanities’.
