Shin splints are usually caused by strenous exercise especially by sports like tennis, squash or football (the so called stop-start sports) or long distance running where the risk of injuring the front part of your leg is high. The injury can be either due to exerting excessive pressure on the lower leg muscles (like in long distance running) or excessive impact on the muscle.

The tricky bit is that after initial shot of immense pain, the feeling goes slightly away giving us a false sense of comfort so we often keep going. Sadly in case of shin splint “running through the pain” is the worst thing you can do so make sure to have it looked at asap rather than playing the hero card 🙂
