I’ve never tried this technique, but apparently it is a suggested method of preventing your eyes from stinging and watering. The theory behind this technique is that putting the onion in the water will draw out the sulphuric compounds from the onions surfaces. However, this comes with the disadvantage of a milder tasting onion :/
I was once told to hold a spoon in my mouth while chopping onions….it sometimes worked, but I did look a little silly!!
